Aims and objectives of this qualification

This qualification develops practical teaching skills and, through the optional units, prepares teachers to work in a wide range of contexts. It requires observation and assessment of practice. It can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification

  • individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification

  • individuals currently working as Assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification.

The objective of this qualification is to confirm occupational competence in a teaching role within the workplace

 

Entry guidance

All trainee teachers joining this qualification programme should undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, mathematics and ICT. They should record their development needs and, where applicable, agree an action plan to address them. If trainees join the qualification programme having already undertaken an initial assessment of their English, mathematics and ICT skills, their record of development needs and any previous action taken to address them should be reviewed and updated as required.

 

Qualification structure and how to achieve

To be awarded the NCFE Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, learners are required to successfully complete five mandatory units and a minimum of one optional unit.

Learners must achieve a minimum of 36 credits: 21 from the mandatory units and a minimum of 15 from the optional units. At least 21 credits must be at or above Level 4.

Optional units available for this qualification cover areas such as assessing occupational competence in the work environment, principles and practice of lip-reading teaching, and inclusive practice; please refer to the Qualification Specification for more information.

 

Benefits and progression opportunities

The objective of this qualification is to confirm occupational competence in a teaching role within the workplace.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to NCFE Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.
