What does the qualification cover?

This qualification prepares learners to set up a home based childcare setting. It is also suitable for learners who wish to be employed in home based childcare settings as childminding assistants or other home childcarers (e.g. nannies, au pairs).

The qualification has been developed in collaboration with the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY).

Unit 1 provides learners with the knowledge required to work with children in a home based childcare setting whilst Unit 2 prepares learners to set up a home based childcare business. 

Who is it suitable for?

The qualification is suitable for learners wishing to work as:

• childminders
• childminding assistants
• nannies
• au pairs
• other childcarers in home based settings.​

What are the entry requirements?

Learners should be at least 16 years old. We do not set any other entry requirements but colleges or training providers may have their own guidelines.

How is it assessed?

This qualification will be internally assessed using a range of assessment methods. This could include a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task.

Do you need to have access to practical placement?

This is a knowledge-only qualification; therefore, no placement in a real work environment in required.

How long does it take to complete?

You can usually complete it in less than 6 months.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

Although it does not provide direct progression, the subjects covered in this Award make a useful introduction to our Early Years Educator qualifications.
